Unix Domain Sockets support

Manticore supports TCP but not Unix Domain Sockets, like MySQL. Could it support Unix Domain Sockets too?

It does support unix domain sockets - Server settings > Searchd | Manticore Search Manual

Why not? Could it be enabled by default?

Because defaults optimize for portability, simplicity, and fewer surprises while Unix domain sockets come with platform limitations and permission pitfalls.
